The Great Christmas Break Down

Christmas was even better than expected.

Dec. 23rd: JOey's Birthday and our big family Christmas bash. Just imagine Suzanne, Jana, Leona and Olivia playing twister. Then picture Suzanne falling on Jana and Leona as Olivia (1.5 years) scurried away. Nobody was bored.

uh, maybe you had to be there.

As always, the lasagna was excellent and abundant. Sugar and gingerbread cookies were decorated and family videos viewed. Eight out of ten children were there. Elmer and Tiffawee, you were missed (as well as your families).

Dec. 24th: Christmas Eve. The morning started out with a S. family musical production full of poignant and hilarious moments. Melissa(James' wife) sang "What Child is This". Karl and Leona family sang "The STar of Bethlehem" complete with full costume and manger scene. Lizzy was an angel and kept picking up and rocking the baby Jesus even though she was just supposed to be watching over him. Think about it. It was poignant. Tepid and I sang "Little One" as a duet while Janakins played on the piano. In-between the first and the second verse I read Mosiah 3:5-8. I choked up on verses 6 and 7 so of course everyone else had to as well. It was like old times.

Then we all attended church with The Parents. My father sang in the choir so it made the musical production a little more interesting.

Later that night we had Christmas Eve dinner. This year the menu included Borscht, wilted spinach salad, turkey, stuffing, coconut rice, gravy and rosemary carrots. For desert? Home made strawberry pie and citrus pound cake with blood orange sauce.

Dec. 25th: Christmas Day. Everyone was surprised to see me still here. I was supposed to go to Hamburg, Germany but couldn't make it because the flights filled up at the last minute from SLC to Newark. So I got to spend Christmas Day with everyone.
Christmas Day in our family involves lounging and playing games and eating left overs.

In the morning, Janakins and I went over to Suzanne's and did some pilates. We also had Christmas lunch since she believes that's what you should do on Christmas day. Ham, au gratin potatoes, rolls, salad. I had nothing to do with that Tradition Breaking. But the food was excellent.

Later that night we gathered at Karl and Leona's for video game marathons (most of the guys were involved in this--I quite honestly believe it was Warcraft--everyone brought over their computers)and Phase 10 Dice (all of the women and Neil). I won. Actually, I was on a winning streak. I pretty much won every game I played this Christmas.

Lasagna and everything else you could imagine (including treats from Belgium and Switzerland) were consumed. As we are social eaters and a ridiculously jovial family (except when being dramatic), we all had a fabulous time.

I did hear my mother say it was The Best Christmas Ever. So here's a toast to the best Christmas ever in the Best December.

Will it be the Best New Years? I will be in Milan, Italy. Alone. Perhaps I will make friends? It is New Year's Eve after all. . .

Hmmm...I am just trying to figure out how there could be Schurigs in Mesa Arizona that I have never heard of.

I am glad y'all had a great Christmas.

My grandfather was Frank Schurig, (twin to Fred), who moved to Tuscon many years ago. My father, Daniel, moved to California around fourty years ago, but there are Schurigs from our branch in Phoenix and there abouts whom I visit now and then.

My Dad has a grandfather from Texas named Emil Schurig. His wife was Anna Schindler. They had a farm in Texas. . .I can find out what city.

I'll ask my father. My Grandfather, Rudolph Schurig moved to Arizona and finally settled in Mesa where my father grew up.

There are not very many Schurig's in the US so it is always good to hear from one.
